Human Element volunteers at Buhr Park Ice Arena Event

Andrea Evans’ superpower is managing chaos.

This past weekend, Human Element joined forces with Give 365, a volunteering program in the City of Ann Arbor’s Parks and Recreation Department, to help facilitate the 2017 Ice Blitz for area children. There were a variety of on-ice and off-ice activities, including face painting, fowling (which is a combination of football, bowling, and ice skating), connect four, arts & crafts, and the most popular – s’mores and hot chocolate stations to fill up on after all of the excitement!

Andrea and Jason manned the s’mores fire pit, though at times it looked similar to a lunch rush at McDonald’s. Those waiting in line to roast their marshmallows were patient and courteous, and everyone got [at least one] of the delightful little treats.

Sabra, Dree, and I were put in charge of the craft table, which involved a ton of foam stickers and tissue paper… also glue sticks, which managed to survive the 50-something snowmen they encountered.

For the remainder of the year, Human Element is planning on partaking in one volunteering event per quarter. Next quarter, we plan on helping out Food Gatherers, a company that is responsible for distributing millions of pounds of food to over 150 non-profit programs in Washtenaw County.

Human Element volunteers because we feel it is important to us to be a part of the community and give back in some way, no matter if it’s doing house builds with Habitat for Humanity, sorting food, or organizing craft supplies. After all, it’s the human element in the equation that is the most important.
